One month of the 2003 DTBL season is in the books, and things are shaping up for a fine fantasy baseball season, not to mention a fine MLB season, what with the Cubs and Royals in first place and all. Just as there are surpring teams in MLB, there are a few surprises in DTBL as well. Jay's Jackalope, a pre-season contender for the DTBL title, find themselves mired in 9th after a terrible start from their starting pitchers. Going in the opposite direction, Nick's Naturals, just in their 2nd year, find themselves in 2nd place after just one month. However, the team of the month award goes to Mike's Moonshiners. The Moonshiners finished the month with 73.50 points, 5 ahead of the 2nd place Naturals. Relatively strong, similar numbers from both the hitting and pitching categories propelled the Moonshiners to their first team of the month award in quite some time.
Even though they finished in 1st for the month, the Moonshiners failed to have any truly outstanding individual performances. The hitter of the month for April was Alfonso Soriano of Kevin's Kings. This New York Yankee 2nd baseman batted a healthy .371, scoring 26 runs, bashing 9 homers while driving in 25, and swiping 6 bases as well. Having won two player of the week awards in April, the player of the month award was inevitable.
The pitcher of the month for April is an old stalwart of Charlie's Thunder Choppers, Mike Mussina. Another New York Yankee, Mussina put up impressive numbers, featuring a .919 WHIP and a 1.70 ERA while winning 5 games and striking out 42 batters in 37 innings pitched. This player of the month award was preceded by a pitcher of the week award in April.
