2019 Player Adds/Drops

Postby Kevin » Tue Feb 26, 2019 1:18 am

A day later than I had hoped, but here is the first cut at the list of players who will be added to, and dropped from, the league roster. As usual, I'm open to suggestions on changes, so feel free to reply. I will be finalizing the list very soon though, because we are going to need to get the draft started a little earlier than usual. Expect an email about that tomorrow.

There are some absolute DTBL legends on the cut list this year. Yes, I'm talking about Nicky Delmonico and Tyler Chatwood! Maybe Albert Pujols, Adrian Beltre and Joe Mauer as well.

You'll notice I have Ohtani listed as an outfielder. He did not make an appearance in the field (besides as a pitcher) last season, so the outfield designation is based on the last position he played in Japan, which was actually all the way back in 2014.

Only one question really jumps out at me - doesn't Addison Reed have a chance to be the closer in Minnesota this year?

I suppose he technically has a chance since the Twins haven't named a closer. But personally, I have him ranked as the 4th or 5th option on that team and already have three Twins RPs included in the league: May, Rogers and Parker. Reed did not record a single save for the Twins last year, so I would be pretty surprised if he suddenly won this competition coming off a very mediocre season.

Thanks, Kevin. What about Garrett Hampson and Touki Toussaint? Hampson should play a lot and Touki might crack the rotation.

I'm definitely willing to give Hampson additional consideration, but he has a couple things working against him. First, I'm not so sure about him playing a lot. The depth charts I've seen have McMahon getting the bulk of the time at 2B, which is the only reason McMahon is not on the 1B cut list. The other problem with Hampson is that he would be a SS for this season, which was a pretty tough position for me to whittle down this year. I had a hard time with my decision to drop Tulowitzki, for example. Basically, if Hampson were to be added, it would come at Scott Kingery's expense... another guy facing depth chart issues. Do people have a strong preference between Hampson and Kingery? I'm willing swap them, but personally give Kingery a slight edge.

As for Touki, his spot in the rotation is probably directly tied to Mike Soroka, who is on the add list. But Soroka is currently nursing a shoulder injury. I could easily swap Touki in for Soroka, particularly if there is any additional negative news about the latter in the upcoming days. Stay tuned.

Looks good, Kevin.

To piggyback on the Hampson item, I think he has a better chance at playing time than Kingery. And I've heard Hampson talked about a fair amount on offseason podcasts, but Kingery seems to be an afterthought. It is tough to call which will actually get playing time.

I have a suggestion: What if we just remove Addison Russell from the player list. Besides being a piece of garbage, he will miss a fair chunk of the season, and who knows what his playing time will be. Cubs can play Baez at SS all year and have guys like Zobrist, Happ and Nico Hoerner that can play 2B. I'll make a bold prediction that both Hampson and Kingery have more ABs in 2019 than Russell

Oooh... I like this suggestion. Would anybody be sad to see Russell go? Would anybody be willing to admit it if they were?

I'm on board with that - didn't realize Russell was still in the pool. And as Marc said I don't think he's going to play much.

I wouldn't be terribly sad if Russell were gone. Both from DTBL and the Cubs.

Okay, I've made two changes to the list above. First, Garrett Hampson is now on the shortstop add list and Addison Russell will be dropped. Next, due to yesterday's news that Salvador Perez has a torn UCL and will miss the entire season, he won't be of any use to anybody this year. So I've dropped him and Chance Sisco lives to play another season in the DTBL.

I've decided against adding Addison Reed or Touki Toussaint. Both are at positions that are already well represented by their MLB teammates (3 Twins RPs and 5 Braves SPs are on the league roster). I thought about swapping in Toussaint for Mike Soroka, since the latter appears ticketed for AAA to start the season. However, I think Soroka has a little more future value and is ranked ahead of Toussaint on pretty much all of the rankings lists I've seen.

As for Ohtani, I've decided to take Marc's suggestion and will allow the drafting team to choose between designating him as an OF or 1B this season. This decision must be made before Opening Day and will hold for the full season. Should a team decide to keep Ohtani for next year, they will be able to choose between SP, OF or 1B for his position next year (unless he plays in the field at some point this season, in which case that position would be his only non-pitching position of eligibility), but will need to make that decision before the draft. I'll set March 1 as the deadline each year for determining if Ohtani, or future dual role players, will be designated as hitters or pitchers for the upcoming season.

The official 2019 draft player pool will be posted later today. Thank you for all of your feedback. It was very helpful and much appreciated.
