Ohtani Creates 50/50 Club

Normally, when you put up a statline of a .322 batting average with 58 home runs and 144 runs batted in, you would be a shoe-in for the league’s Most Valuable Player award. But this year, that was not nearly enough for Aaron Judge to win his second DTBL MVP award. Bobby Witt and Jose Ramirez also had seasons that would have won them the award in many other years. In 2024, however, there was another player who had a truly historic season. Shohei Ohtani became the first member of the 50/50 Club. Prior to this year, no DTBL player with at least 50 home runs had stolen as many as 25 bases. Ohtani more than doubled that, finishing with 59 steals to go along with his 54 home runs. The Moonshiners versatile slugger is the 2024 DTBL Most Valuable Player.
Ohtani filled up the league leaderboard this season. His .310 averag...

DTBL DiscussionA heads up that I completed the post-season PAR update last night to incorporate 2024 league-wide stats into the formula and then re-ran the '24 PAR totals for individual players.
For hitters, most players saw their PAR drop a bit, particularly among guys who racked up signifi...

DTBL DiscussionHere is the first version of the list of players who will be added to, and removed from, the league roster for 2024. Notably, there is a bit less turnover than usual this year. At the moment, we have 108 players who were not part of the league a year ago slated to be added for '24. This...

I hate to do this on such short notice before the draft begins, and without an official injury treatment plan being put in place. But in light of Lucas Giolito being diagnosed with a partial UCL tear that will likely cost him the season, I think I'm going to go ahead and replace him in th...

DTBL DiscussionI'm just about done with my first draft of the 2024 DTBL player roster. But first, let's go over the players who will be changing positions in this league this year. As has been the case in recent years, this is another pretty long list. It's both quantity and quality this year. There ...

DTBL DiscussionOver the past few days, I've been hard at work compiling the pool of players who will make up the league roster for 2024. I should be ready to post the official position change list, soon followed by the first version of the player add/drop lists in the next few days. But first, a draft ...

DTBL DiscussionBefore I get to the list of players who will be added to and removed from the league's player pool for the upcoming season, I want to mention that I made a slight adjustment to the position distribution of these slots. Somewhat counterintuitively, despite the NL now having a full-time des...

With today's news that Gavin Lux tore his ACL and will probably miss the entire season, there isn't much reason to keep him on the league roster for '23. Since he was slated to move from SS to 2B (in this league), I'm replacing him with 2B Tony Kemp.

DTBL DiscussionIt is nice to finally be back to a relatively normal spring training schedule. I guess that's not entirely true with the World Baseball Classic set to begin in a couple weeks. But at least the regular season has a definitive start date this year. So we are going to return to our usual s...

DTBL DiscussionI have completed the update to all players' 2022 PAR values. As a reminder, this post-season update is done to include the recently completed season's numbers in the PAR formula, replacing the oldest of the five seasons worth of data that is used as the historical baseline. Throughout th...

DTBL DiscussionBefore we get into the 2022 season, I want to mention the 2021 PAR update that I ran a couple weeks ago, shortly after the lockout ended. Usually, soon after the season ends, I run an update on the player PAR totals for the recently completed season. These updates incorporate adjustments...

DTBL DiscussionHere is my initial list of players who will be added to the league player pool for 2022. As I stated in an email, I'm going to hold off with the drops until after the roster cut deadline. Even more than usual, this is going to be a very fluid list. I started working on this several week...

The roster cuts have been processed, so the drops have been added to the lists above. Turns out, there were three starting pitchers who were kept that were going to be on my drop list. I guess this is why I usually wait until after the cuts are done before I start working on these lists....

Hate to do this on such short notice, but I need to make one last change. I completely missed relief pitcher Scott Barlow because I think I confused him with Joe Barlow who was already on my add list. Both will be added to the player pool. As a result, Matt Wisler will be dropped.

DTBL DiscussionWe're back! I will be posting the list of players who will be added to the league roster either later tonight or, more likely, tomorrow morning. But first, the position changes for 2022. I am fairly confident this is the longest such list I have ever compiled... by a wide margin.
